what is it like to teach meditation inside prison?
Join Joh Jarvis, a Vedic Meditation teacher and former journalist, for a talk about her work teaching meditation in the US prison system.
Joh will share how her discovery of meditation during her two-decade media career led to profound personal changes, eventually motivating her to train as a Vedic meditation teacher to bring the benefits of meditation to others in New York, Adelaide, and Sydney.
In 2021, Joh founded The Light Inside, a foundation dedicated to teaching meditation to incarcerated individuals, formerly incarcerated people, corrections officers, and corrections staff.
Her work within prisons has provided her with unique insights into the transformative power of meditation in the most challenging environments. Joh will share compelling stories of personal growth, resilience, and healing from her students behind bars, illustrating how meditation can foster inner light even in the darkest of places.
Joh’s talk offers first-hand insight into the profound impact meditation can have, on individuals -including those labelled society’s “worst of the worst” - and more broadly across prison populations, offering both inspiration and practical wisdom.
Length: 90 minutes
